Dogs cannot do ‘equality’.
In the dog’s mind everyone is either a follower or a leader. If you are not the leader in your dog’s eyes it is very difficult to teach your dog anything at all.
Dogs have their own set of instinctive signals that tell them who is a leader and who is a follower.
Most humans get these signals wrong and end up constantly telling the dog that it is the Leader and therefore in charge of the family.
If I (the dog) am in charge I shouldn’t have to listen to you when you speak.
If I am in charge my rules also say that I have all the responsibility for the safety and security of this family and our home, on my shoulders.
The vast majority of dogs don’t really want the responsibility that comes with this high rank and are therefore permanently stressed.
Also the human members of the pack are bigger than the dog and although of lower rank, can browbeat the Leader to do what they want it to do.
This can also cause lots of stress in the dog’s mind.
A stressed dog is not a happy dog. An unhappy dog causes unhappy owners.
This is not good.
